Getting Old Is a Privilege
Aging is always thought of with a dreadful feeling like you are reaching for the time you can’t do anything but wait to die.
Most people don’t feel good about becoming old. I certainly didn’t. As I am reaching my 30s and already seeing my first fine lines on the forehead, my brain flusters into thoughts of getting old.
But being old is not a bad thing; it is a great thing. It means we had the chance to live the all years life gives us. It means we have the opportunity to learn and rebuild from past mistakes.
The older I get, the better I fathom life. I am wiser and understand myself better — to truly know who I am. I am stronger and more resilient.
As I looked closely at the mirror, I realized: getting old is not something to be scared of; it is to be cherished. Every year represents a full eclipse of knowledge, every wrinkle represents a conquered challenge.
Every day, every year, allows us to learn, become a better version of ourselves, and rewrite the story how we want it.
As Bernardine Evaristo said, “[You should] celebrate getting older because it is such a privilege to not die prematurely.”
